The West Galari Traditional Owner responsibility country covers three clan areas of Wiradyuri speaking country. As traditional owners we acknowledge the thousands of ancestor generations that came before us to create who we are today as Wiradyuri people. We honour deeply the lore laid down in the land by old mother and all work we undertake is framed upon the relationship, responsibility and obligation mother requires from our family.

About us

The West Galari Wiradyuri Traditional Owner Aboriginal Corporation is the only evidenced based wholly Traditional Owner Representative Group for West Galari Country and therefore holds the exclusive cultural authority, on behalf of its members, for matters pertaining to West Galari Country, Culture and Heritage.

The Corporation is in a process of applying for native title recognition. Once the application is lodged, then registered by the National Native Title Tribunal Registrar, all Culture and Heritage activities on West Galari Country must come through the Corporation under Australian Law.

Our purpose

promote, protect and enhance the health, wellbeing, equity, culture and connectedness of Indigenous Persons, in particular, the West Galari Wiradyuri People.
Protect the sacred creator geography within the West Galari claim area
protect, and promote and enact the lore, laws, culture, practices, property rights, and human rights of Indigenous Persons and in particular the West Galari Wiradyuri People.
promote and protect Aboriginal Cultural Heritage and act as agent or representative for the West Galari Wiradyuri People in respect of matters relating to Aboriginal Cultural Heritage on West Galari Wiradyuri Country.
take steps to achieve the repatriation of Aboriginal Cultural Heritage of the West Galari Wiradyuri People.
advance the inherent Indigenous and human rights of the West Galari Wiradyuri People, including the right to govern under Wiradyuri lore.
promote, negotiate, and manage agreements about respect of West Galari Wiradyuri Country including land management, environmental planning and protection

Our Team

West Galari Wiradyuri Traditional Owner Aboriginal Corporation hold Ancestral allodial rights of our Country which have never been, and never will be, ceded Approximately eight years was spent by a number of Wiradyuri people, researching to find evidence that supported our oral knowledge and confirming everything with Wiradyuri Elders. It was critical that we could find historical accounts confirming what we already know relating to our clan groups and the extent of the Country that West Galari Wiradyuri have inherent rights and obligations over. It was equally critical that we worked through a governance model that represented our traditional lore, law, customs and protocols and could be applied in a contemporary context. The governance model took three years to refine with the input from many Wiradyuri and other Aboriginal people.
